SHIFT RUN STOP’s Episode 60 features a fun, chatty interview with Ronson about THEM… not that’s he’s particularly formal in his other interviews…

Shift your personal paradigm; start aiming lower, get out of the rat race, stop hunkering down, killing yourself for some modicum of “success!”

The Men Who Stare At Goats touched on the subject of government mind control experiments, of which there’s a ton of data, some factual, some made-up… all fascinating!  Pure evil, of course - very real, and one those rare ‘conspiracy theories’ that you can actually find documented proof of.

Just do a little reading about MKUltra… it’s ’mentioned’ in Tom Weiner’s Legacy of Ashes: A History of the CIA, and more in-depth in the now-pased on Jerry Smith’s HAARP, The Ultimate Weapon of the Conspiracy.

Jon Ronson Saves has reached 1163 hits… random number to announce, but no more or less meaningful that saying 1000 or some other nicely-rounded number.  Bottom Line - folks are viewing the site… now how about responding to the site?

JRS was created to be a forum for comments; maybe I’m doing something wrong, maybe it’s not designed correctly… maybe I’m the only one who likes talking about the works of Jon Ronson.  I don’t think so, judging from the daily URL’s I see pop up with his name in an article or interview.  So share your comments, if you have them!

I’ve solicited comments from Mr. Romson, though I guess at this time I don’t have a platform that interests him.  But he did reply and was nice about it and all.  I do try to promote his work, though I’ve gotten a bit behind of late, my day job keeping me quite busy, plus kids, my own fiction writing, life in general.  But I think Ronson has done a TON of groundbreaking research into some of the most well covered-up areas in recent American history.  Sometimes that fact gets buried under his ‘gonzo’ style of reportage, perhaps…but it’s there, for those willing to pause and consider for a moment some of the things he’s saying.

Read what the man has to say, and read some of what his detractors have to say, too… He’s not perfect, after all, and there are a few valid criticisms of him out there, as well as far too many very mean and stupid ones.

Wasting Control

Well, I’ve been a bit slow posting my Jon Ronson updates of late… but then again, this here is the only sort of stuff he’s been up to:

I thought his new Escape and Control series would be more interesting and poignant, but this Episode 5 is steering the series in the wrong direction.  Of course, you never know what’s next…

Just heard of “Twitlonger,” via a Jon Ronson post, of course. Some psycho wrote him a letter; Ronson posted the whole thing on Twitlonger, which is, as it sounds, a way to Twitter longer passages.  This is a well written letter by, if not a psychopath, at least a good writer:

Jon Ronson’s got a brisk new series in the works – Esc & Ctrl, about the Internet and who’s controlling it…and your access to information on it.

The Guardian is soliciting inputs as to the direction viewers would like to see the series veer:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/video/2011/aug/24/jon-ronson-esc-ctrl-video?CMP=twt_fd

My comments were that I’d:

…like to know more about what the WWW is, who started it and why, and who ‘runs’ it.
Also, is anybody ‘planning’ the expansion of the Internet? Is it all random or is their an overarching goal?
What do Singularitarians like Ray Kurzweil believe about the future of the Internet? Will we upload bits of ourselves online.. or perhaps our whole consciousness, rather than living ‘Second Lives’ through Avatars?
Will the Internet become Intelligent?
What do futurists like Michio Kaku think will happen with the Internet? There’s someone to interview!

Ronson writes an article on poker for Time Out but ends up overplaying his hand…

Here’s a brief tiff between Gutshot bloggers and Ronson’s spokesperson, Vicky Coren. I didn’t see the Time Out article online, but will keep looking.

While I disagree with Coren that being familiar with Ronson’s writing style should override any misunderstandings or hard feelings on the part of the players, I think that anyone going into an interview situation with a journalist ought to realize that journalists make a living writing sensational stories. Ronson is no exception; he’s the rule! He does make many of his subjects come across in ways they would not have wanted and that sells books. He’s the Borat of reporting, and like Borat, if you’re willing to let him in then you should understand there’s going to be a gag involved. Of course, like Borat, many folks don’t realize that he’s a humorist and thus feel duped and express hard feelings and lawsuits. I can’t imagine how many seriously dangerous people Ronson has pissed off in his career, but reading his books, you can sense it’s a lot. And the more fame he garners, the more they’re all steaming, I’m sure.

Well, that’s his chosen profession, and he knows what he’s doing, insofar as he knows he’s upsetting a lot of folks and must understand the baggage that comes with. I’m not his apologist, and as I’ve written before, I don’t always agree with his methods…but I am still a fan!

http://www.gutshot.com/forum/showthread.php/4605-MESSAGE-FROM-JON-RONSON

So I’ve been on vacation and since I do not watch television and do not spend much time online (on ‘the Google’) I admit I was negligently unaware of the riots in England…until I happened to catch a tweet from Jon Ronson.  Then I caught a segment on NPR and realized the extensive nature of the thing.  But couldn’t learn what was the catalyst.  What started it all?  Anybody?

I get that once a riot’s going on, people will hop on the bandwagon.  I get that Avergae Nigel Brit, tipping back a pint of warm ale and watching the football game* at the Crown and Thistle might have a mind to go out and view the chaos with his own eyes and then, if he’s young, dumb, drunk, and painfully ignorant of the fact he’s being recorded and will later be arrested might go on and nip a pair of sneakers since everyone else is doing it.  Okay, that’s the herd mentality.  Not an excuse, but at least a reason to act like a daft punk.  But again, what started it, how did it spread out of London…and why did five people have to die for it?  What the hell…

Thanks Jon Ronson for the Twitter reportage; believe it or not, there are those of habitating under rocks who might otherwise have not been clued in to this week of tragedy.

*Soccer game

The UK’s Guardian once let Ronson take over their film page for one glorious week, perhaps as a promotional bit for the film based on his book, The Men Who Stare At Goats.  And in that week a wealth of articles and info was amassed regarding goats, military projects, comments by Jim Channon (the originator of US Army’s ”First Earth Battalion”).

Do yourself a favor and dive into this archived pool of knowledge!

Here’s a quote from the always fascinating Lt Col Channon’s article, The Paranormal Soldier Demystified:

Remember, the real victims of war are the young soldiers who must live a lifetime of regret and trauma because they have inadvertently killed a woman or child in the heat of a firefight. We must accept that the trauma victims of modern warfare are casualties for the rest of their lives. Not moving into danger zones is simply the most skillful thing any unit can do in many situations

Ronson flys to my neck of the woods to interview injured Seattle superhero Phoenix Jones for a GQ article.  Jones, who is so badass he picked up a robber’s mask and made it part of his own costume, says, “He used the mask to conceal his identity,” he says. “I used the mask to become an identity.”

Michael Echanis, the goat-staring, remote viewing merc badass mentioned in The Men Who Stare at Goats, has been called “America’s First Ninja.”  A bit of research about Echanis and his books brings out of mixed bag of feelings regarding the man, especially some of his unorthodox knife combat techniques.  Nonetheless he’s a fascinating character well worth checking out, if Goats left you wanting more info.

Sean Hart of the Argus Observer brings up an overlooked point that Echanis was a native of Ontario, Oregon…just down the road from me!

I wholeheartedly agree with Ronson’s conclusion, noted below in an article by Anson Cameron for The Age:

The most important part of Ronson’s book is when he reveals how easy it is to set off a false epidemic in psychiatry and how many kids in the US are now prescribed drugs to cure the weirdness once known as childhood. A nationwide effort seems under way to subdue the US’s more spirited nippers with a triple dose of whatever new and improved barbiturate is wowing the market. To tranquilise Tom Sawyer into painting his own fence, as it were. Oh, America.

I figured it’s only fair to run the Hare Checklist on Jon Ronson himself; I’m sure he’s already done so.  Knowing only what he’s revealed himself through his works, my best guess is he scores around a 13… far away from the 30 or more required for a diagnosis of psychopathy.  Still, I think he may have some impulse issues…

1 Glib and Superficial Charm The tendency to be smooth, engaging, charming, slick, and verbally facile. Psychopathic charm is not in the least shy, self-conscious, or afraid to say anything. A psychopath never gets tongue-tied. They have freed themselves from the social conventions about taking turns in talking, for example.  1 – He said so himself in an interview: He’s a ‘mission of charm.’
2 Grandiose Self-Worth A grossly inflated view of one’s abilities and self-worth, self-assured, opinionated, cocky, a braggart. Psychopaths are arrogant people who believe they are superior human beings.  1 – Maybe a bit; he does feature himself as a character in all his books.  Most reporters do not
3 Need for Stimulation or
Proneness to Boredom
An excessive need for novel, thrilling, and exciting stimulation; taking chances and doing things that are risky. Psychopaths often have a low self-discipline in carrying tasks through to completion because they get bored easily. They fail to work at the same job for any length of time, for example, or to finish tasks that they consider dull or routine.  2 – He hangs out with terrorists and KKK leaders, death squad killers, pyschos, etc… that’s a guy with boredom issues!
4 Pathological Lying Can be moderate or high; in moderate form, they will be shrewd, crafty, cunning, sly, and clever; in extreme form, they will be deceptive, deceitful, underhanded, unscrupulous, manipulative, and dishonest.  0
5 Conning and Manipulativeness The use of deceit and deception to cheat, con, or defraud others for personal gain; distinguished from Item #4 in the degree to which exploitation and callous ruthlessness is present, as reflected in a lack of concern for the feelings and suffering of one’s victims.  1 - Again, a bit.  He uses charm to get people to let their defenses down and tell him things they wouldn’t or shouldn’t otherwise
6 Lack of Remorse or Guilt A lack of feelings or concern for the losses, pain, and suffering of victims; a tendency to be unconcerned, dispassionate, coldhearted, and unempathic. This item is usually demonstrated by a disdain for one’s victims.  0
7 Shallow Affect Emotional poverty or a limited range or depth of feelings; interpersonal coldness in spite of signs of open gregariousness.  0
8 Callousness and
Lack of Empathy
A lack of feelings toward people in general; cold, contemptuous, inconsiderate, and tactless.  0
9 Parasitic Lifestyle An intentional, manipulative, selfish, and exploitative financial dependence on others as reflected in a lack of motivation, low self-discipline, and inability to begin or complete responsibilities.  1 – Well, that’s all reporters, isn’t it?
10 Poor Behavioral Controls Expressions of irritability, annoyance, impatience, threats, aggression, and verbal abuse; inadequate control of anger and temper; acting hastily.  1 – Mainly this is because of the last one, acting hastily… like crashing the BoHo party
11 Promiscuous Sexual Behavior A variety of brief, superficial relations, numerous affairs, and an indiscriminate selection of sexual partners; the maintenance of several relationships at the same time; a history of attempts to sexually coerce others into sexual activity or taking great pride at discussing sexual exploits or conquests.  0
12 Early Behavior Problems A variety of behaviors prior to age 13, including lying, theft, cheating, vandalism, bullying, sexual activity, fire-setting, glue-sniffing, alcohol use, and running away from home.  0
13 Lack of Realistic,
Long-Term Goals
an inability or persistent failure to develop and execute long-term plans and goals; a nomadic existence, aimless, lacking direction in life.  1 – Unless he’s building to a Grand Unified Conspiracy Theory, his book subjects seem to be all over the place
14 Impulsivity The occurrence of behaviors that are unpremeditated and lack reflection or planning; inability to resist temptation, frustrations, and urges; a lack of deliberation without considering the consequences; foolhardy, rash, unpredictable, erratic, and reckless.  2 – Again, he broke into the Bohemian Grove… with numerous reasons to wave off, and with nutty guys like Alex Jones hanging around…
15 Irresponsibility Repeated failure to fulfill or honor obligations and commitments; such as not paying bills, defaulting on loans, performing sloppy work, being absent or late to work, failing to honor contractual agreements.  2 – Tough one.  I think pretending you aren’t Jewish and hanging out with terrorists is sort of irresponsible.  Unless you have a death wish
16 Failure to Accept Responsibility
for Own Actions
A failure to accept responsibility for one’s actions reflected in low conscientiousness, an absence of dutifulness, antagonistic manipulation, denial of responsibility, and an effort to manipulate others through this denial.  1 – I’m citing Mary Moore of the BoHo Action Network on this one.  She’s not the only person to criticize Ronson’s methods, but she did post a letter online that sums up her thoughts…
17 Many Short-Term Marital Relationships A lack of commitment to a long-term relationship reflected in inconsistent, undependable, and unreliable commitments in life, including marital.  0
18 Juvenile Delinquency Behavior problems between the ages of 13-18; mostly behaviors that are crimes or clearly involve aspects of antagonism, exploitation, aggression, manipulation, or a callous, ruthless tough-mindedness.  0
19 Revocation of Condition Release A revocation of probation or other conditional release due to technical violations, such as carelessness, low deliberation, or failing to appear.  0
20 Criminal Versatility A diversity of types of criminal offenses, regardless if the person has been arrested or convicted for them; taking great pride at getting away with crimes.  0
  TOTAL    13 – Not a Pyscho!

A much briefer test is presented here:  http://www.naute.com/puzzles/puzzle22.php

Another cool audio clip of an interview from The Sound of Young America, interviewer was Jesse Thorn. This one’s on Ronson’s latest book, The Psychopath Test:

Salon’s Joanna Smith Rakoff subtly turns on the heat in this in-depth ’02 interview with Ronson:

http://dir.salon.com/story/people/conv/2002/03/14/ronson/index.html

Because Ronson’s books go off in so many tangents, often, I feel as if sometimes readers might easily miss an extemely relevent bit of info.

For example, Salon questions Ronson on his choice to agree to watch over some money which he is told will be used to fund terrorist attacks… Ronson admits in the book that he was torn over what to do. As a journalist, he wants to be objective. But still…how can you be objective in such a situation?

From the interview:

This morning I was on this Fox television show and the audience was shouting things like, “Why didn’t you just get a gun and shoot the guy? Why didn’t you just do that? Why were you such a coward? How are you going to help us destroy the axis of evil?”

And yesterday, I was on “Fresh Air” and Terry Gross said, basically, “You portrayed these people as ludicrous, harmless buffoons but you were wrong, weren’t you?”

SALON: Is she right?

My view is that the book is accurate. The way I portrayed the people is accurate. Because they’re human beings and we have a kind of wonderful capacity to be absurd and ridiculous. It would be easy to portray them as one-dimensional demons, but I wanted to do the opposite. Just because they’re buffoons it doesn’t mean they can’t fly planes into the World Trade Center. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

SALON:  Right, but there were a few times when you were in a position to do something — and you didn’t. At the end of your year with Omar Bakri, for example, he asks you to watch the money he’s been collecting throughout the year — money for Hamas that, as you say, “will go to kill Jews in Israel” — and you think about taking the money.

Well, that was obviously a really difficult thing. When I was writing the chapter, I thought, This is an uncomfortable truth about what happens with this kind of journalism — when a journalist gets too close to his subject. It was a moment about journalism more than anything else. But now, after Sept. 11, I can’t help think that we’re in the kind of climate where you’d actually want me to take the money. If I had taken the money I probably would be selling more books here in America.

Ronson’s voice is almost hypnotizingly calm when he’s on radio…

Jon Ronson’s The Men Who Stare at Goats makes many startling claims; the film based on the book goes even further, though granted the film’s not meant to be non-fiction.  But the book IS meant to be non-fiction, and some question Ronson’s representation of the ‘facts.’

Jim Channon, the retired Army colonel featured in both the book and film (in the movie, his character is called Bill Django, played by Jeff Bridges) has spoken often on this topic.  Here’s a few selected bits from The First Earth Battalion’s website; these FAQ’s are written by Lt Col Channon (retired) himself:

WHAT IS THE MOVIE “THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS” AND HOW DOES IT RELATE TO THE FIRST EARTH BATTALION?

The movie evolved from a book of the same title written by British satirical writer Jon Ronson. It stars four of the most creative minds in Hollywood today: George Clooney, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges and Ewan McGregor.

HOW ACCURATELY DO THE BOOK AND THE MOVIE PORTRAY THE REAL STORY OF THE FIRST EARTH BATTALION?

Though they both claim to be based on a true story, author Jon Ronson and screenwriter Peter Straughan took wide artistic license blurring the lines between fact and fiction in order to create a somewhat dark Hollywood comedy. Here are some important facts:

• Channon retired from the military in 1982 and did not serve in Iraq. (Ronson speculated that the sound healing therapies detailed in Evolutionary Tactics evolved into torture techniques in Abu Graib or Guantanamo. This is total speculation since sounds have been used since the beginning of armed struggle to influence moral or frighten the enemy.

WHAT ABOUT THE GOAT LAB AT FORT BRAGG, DID THEY REALLY KILL GOATS THERE?

Jim says he hasn’t a clue. John Alexander another battalion member, mentioned below, says Ronson called himself a documentary film-maker
and then took extra-ordinary license with whatever he wanted.

http://www.firstearthbattalion.com/frequently-asked-questions/what-is-the-first-earth-battalion-and-how-did-it-originate.php

Even John Sergeant, Ronson’s friend and fellow film maker, had some dispute with the film, though this was more over credits than claims.

Sergeant told The Independent: “I worked intensely through 2003 and 2004 on it.” He said that, had the material remained within the context of a documentary, he would happily have let the matter go.

“I never formally agreed for the material I unearthed to be used in other media,” he added, “and I was extremely uncomfortable when it was, especially when I was airbrushed out of things. Ewan McGregor is playing this character who finds the story. [Jon] presents that person as [himself] but really, it is me.”

To Ronson’s credit, he did dedicate the book to John Sergeant and mentioned him in the afterword of the novel.  But the movie credits offered zero mention of Sergeant at all… just Ronson.

I, like probably 99% of the world, learned of the art of ‘cloud bursting’ via Jon Ronson’s book The Men Who Stare at Goats. The First Earth Battalion (yes, a real org originally created by the Army) is advertising a new cloud bursting manual for sale (I just had to share this one…):

From the First Earth Battalion’s home page:

http://www.firstearthbattalion.com/

What is cloud bursting?
In short, cloud bursting is weather control using only the faculties of the mind. This ability, as stated and demonstrated by mystics throughout the ages, is within the realm of our being today.

I knew it the whole time!

Ronson runs the Psychopath Test on Conan… oops, be careful what you ask for, CoCo!

Actually, no, though Conan does meet several of the classic criteria, he’s ultimately judged by Ronson as ‘not’ a psycho… although there’s certainly Something wrong with the guy!  Still, love the hair…

http://teamcoco.com/video/jon-ronson-psychopath-test

In Julie Wheelwright’s Illuminati Conspiracy Archive article, “Scare Crazy,” Jon Ronson, when asked how he gets people to talk, admits ”I’m nothing but charm.  I’m a big huge mission of charm.”

http://www.conspiracyarchive.com/News/NewsItems/1614.htm

Incidentally, I ran across this article while Googling the terms Tavistock and Change Agent:

“A change agent is someone who engages either deliberately or whose behavior results in social, cultural or behavioral change. This can be studied scientifically and effective techniques can be discovered and employed.”

I wish I hadn’t searched for Tavistock… sometimes you just don’t want to know the truth.  But here’s an article for your consideration–

Tavistock: The Best Kept Secret In America

http://educate-yourself.org/nwo/nwotavistockbestkeptsecret.shtml

Only slightly dated Colbert interview with Jon Ronson about The Men Who Stare at Goats.  Colbert tries to pull the ol’ sparkly eyes move on Ronson, then pressures him to attempt to stop the heart of a goat… with dire results!

http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/249700/september-17-2009/goat-lab—jon-ronson

In an interview posted on his website, www.jonronson.com, Ronson argues he’s really not so much of a faux naif, meaning someone who sort of pretends to be dumber than they are in order to trick others, or lull them into some false sense of security so they’ll reveal a bit of info they might otherwise not share.

From the interview:

With regards your presentational style how faux is your naif ? And generally how happy are you with your TV persona?

Jon Ronson: I have only got my TV persona (if it IS a ‘persona’, that is, I’m not sure that it is a persona) right on a few occasions: Secret Rulers of the World and Tottenham Ayatollah. The rest of the time it hasn’t quite worked. Faux Naifery is a delicate art that can get annoying if mishandled. I’ve been doing a lot of mishandling of late.
I don’t know how faux it is. Much of Them is about me trying to track down the Bilderberg Group, who the likes of Omar Bakri and David Icke believe is the shadowy cabal that secretly controls the world.
Now, I could have done a whole lot of research about Bilderberg before I set off to try and track them down. but I didn’t want to solve the mystery before I had the adventure, whatever the adventure might be.

The rest can be read here:  http://www.jonronson.com/jon_biog.html

Ronson’s on Conan this Wednesday (18 Jul 11).  Rock on, CoCo!  Maybe it’ll make up for having Seth Green on the show…

http://teamcoco.com/schedule

This is the first article I’ve seen where Ronson, albeit indirectly, tackles the topic of alien life.  His interview with Paul Davies (for the Guardian, of course) is a good read.  Davies is on the SETI (Search For Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Post-Detection Task Group.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/global/2010/mar/06/paul-davies-aliens-welcome-jon-ronson

Davies’s website: http://cosmos.asu.edu/index.html

The article ends with a ‘damn interesting’ reference to the so-called Wow signal–proof perhaps of the one and only signal Earth has ever received from space.

http://www.damninteresting.com/the-wow-signal/

The Book Show asked Ronson which book everyone should read before the age of 21.  His pick?

Slaughterhouse Five, by Kurt Vonnegut!

An unusual choice, perhaps, but not one I disagree with… although I’d say everyone would have to re-read it before they turn 35, just to makesure they are old enough to comprehend at least more of it than that did at 21.  And for learning writing style, sorry but I disagree with Ronson on that one.  I think a young writer needs to learn the basic rules before cliff diving into a style like Vonnegut’s, who basically broke most of the rules… He knew what he was doing (more or less).

Which book do YOU think everyone should read before the tender age of 21?

http://thebookshow.skyarts.co.uk/features/787817/books_to_read_before_youre_21.html

Too busy to be bothered with reading?  How about just listening…

Ronson’s radio archives are up on BBC:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy/jonronson_on.shtml

And This American Life:

http://www.thisamericanlife.org/contributors/jon-ronson

As his site says, each segment ”… delves into a world of personal stories surrounding the central theme which all shed light on the human condition. Sometimes Jon goes in search of answers and stories himself, sometimes his team of contributors do it for him. The end result is an original, fascinating, funny, poignant and often philosophical journey through the human experience.”  Check ‘em out!

From a Tomorrowland article:
“In 1979, the United States Army created a top-secret New Age unit called the First Earth Battalion. It was to be a testing ground for new fighting techniques such as remote viewing, walking through walls and killing goats just by staring at them. The army’s plans for a troop of Om-chanting warrior monks was never fully realized, but the spirit of the First Earth Battalion lives on today.

Journalist Jon Ronson uncovers all this and plenty more in The Men Who Stare at Goats. I just finished it, and let me tell you it’s unstoppable. Unputdownable. Alternately hilarious and terrifying, the book represents the most spectacularly bizarre set of facts about the US military that I have ever encountered. Ronson manages to detour through—and elegantly link—George W. Bush’s bloated Black Ops budget, the Heaven’s Gate cult, Waco, Gitmo, and MK-ULTRA, the CIA’s secret LSD program from the 1950s….”

My sympathy and support for our friends in Great Britain as they commemorate this day, 7 July…the sixth anniversary of the London bombings.

One of the survivors was Ms. Rachel North, mentioned in Ronson’s book, The Psychopath Test.  A whirlwind blogger, she posted of her experiences daily:  http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4670099.stm

This article doesn’t reference Jon Ronson but it’s no coincidence it came out just after his book, The psychopath Test.  Regardless, Ronson jokes a lot about his psychopath-spotting abilities but in his book he seems as skeptical at times about the ability of a checklist to diagnose such things accurately each time.  This article, therefore, isn’t so much as a rebuttal but more of an addendum…

”I’m very concerned about the inappropriate use of this instrument for purposes that have serious implications for individuals and for society. It shouldn’t work that way.”  - Robert Hare, the Canadian psychologist who invented the PCL-R test

No surprise Stanley Kubrick was obsessed with Napoleon (to the point of having an entire library of books on the dictator)… but his type font obsession…now that’s interesting!

To look like Clooney… they’re basically twins.

He’s upset and exposed enough ‘highly influential,’ and in many cases, dangerous and violent people… so it makes total sense to me that Jon Ronson should live in a constant state of paranoia (Danny Casolaro, anyone?). He doesn’t, but the subject does crop up in an old interview (’07) at RINF.com:

Rinf.com: We’ve seen you in some understandably scared and paranoid states of mind. When did the paranoia end?

Jon Ronson: My paranoia never ends, but I haven’t been paranoid about being spied on my shadowy forces for some time now. When I was writing The Men Who Stare At Goats my producer John Sergeant and I were told that Homeland Security or possibly Military Intelligence were interested in us. For a while we thought we should email each other in code, like, “Wednesday is the day of the big wedding”, or whatever, but that we decided that that sounds worse. Right now I am paranoid just about dull domestic matters.

One of my favorite films; read the book, watch this movie!

I love this website!

Disinformation – Launched on September 13, 1996, disinformation was designed to be the search service of choice for individuals looking for information on current affairs, politics, strange science and “hidden information” that seldom slips through the cracks of corporate-owned media.

“Most goat-related military activity is still highly classified.”

“If you recognize some of those [psychopathic] traits in yourself, if you’re feeling a creeping anxiety about it, that means you are not one.” – Jon Ronson
Another great review of The Psychopath Test, by Kylie Sturgess, Skeptical Inquirer Magazine, The Magazine for Science and Reason:

In his books, which all feature him as a character, Ronson seems at times sensitive to criticism. He’s concerned when critics pan his work, call him either a ‘shill’ or ‘stupid,’ as he’s said. To be sure of the meaning, I had to look up shill–a shill is a person who ‘poses as a customer in order to decoy others into participating,’ or ‘a person who publicizes or praises something or someone for reasons of self-interest, personal profit, or friendship or loyalty.’ Basically, a poser.

JON RONSON SAVES is run by fan, but it is not a ‘fan’ site, per se. I have my own critiques of his work, but I’ll say this–I’m convinced he’s no shill. I don’t think he falls into the first category of shillhood at all, that of being a poser, an insider. He’s a journalist, not 1) a paranormal soldier; 2) Bilderberg Group member; 3) psychiatrist…or psychopath! It’s laughably implausible to believe he’s working from within the organizations or groups he’s exposing.

Which brings us to the second shill category, a person who publicizes things for money.

Again, he’s a journalist!!

Yes, he writes for cash, and even questioned the point of blogging (writing for free!) but calling him a shill in this pejorative way is like labeling any hard-working individual who needs a paycheck to support his or her family. I believe we can put the whole shill idea behind us.

So… is Jon Ronson stupid?

Well, there is stupid as in stupid, and there’s stupid as in naïve, perhaps? Of course he isn’t stupid stupid. He’s a bestselling author! Sorry, I know you can be successful and still be considered stupid…but chances are, most successful people may think differently about a thing, but they aren’t utter idiots or they wouldn’t be where they are (unless someone else put them there).
Now, is he stupid as in naïve?

Here again, I hardly think so. He’s unearthed some of the most bizarre cover-ups, conspiracies, and outright deceptions in recent history. And he’s done it in a very Sherlock Holmesian way–simply by playing connect the dots, by digging and digging into the minutia, by hitting a story from every angle, interviewing every bit player and minor actor who would (maybe to their later regret) speak to him. You may not agree with everything he says, but in most cases he’s not jumping to conclusions but rather presenting the accounts of witnesses and experts as related to him in interviews. Does he leave things out; does he put a spin on the stories? A bit, of course. He is a journalist, and a Gonzo one at that. But I see him as a humble one, too, a self-deprecating seeker of greater truths. He expresses his doubts often, doesn’t tell you what to think, he just tells you what was said, sometimes tells you his opinion…and then steps aside, leaving the rest to the reader.

Harrison Koehli of Sign of the Times (sott.net), does a good review (and yes, critique) of The Psychopath Test here:

These crazy journalists managed one of recent history’s all-time greatest stunts, in my opinion–sneaking into the ultra-private retreat of the global elite, known as the Bilderberg Group (currently chaired by 77-year old Belgian industrialist and former EU commissioner Etienne Davignon) , at Bohemian Grove:

Sure you could Google this in a nanosecond.. but I’ve done it for you!  Why?  Because I care.

I want this guy’s writing to be read!  So wake up!

No, I’m not a nut (do non-nuts have to say they aren’t nuts?).  I’m also not a believer in conspiracies just for the sake of believing unusual things.  But some things are true, things you might not believe at first, things you might not expect.  Ronson has been pulling back the curtain for years.  Get on the bus, Gus!

Or anyone else you know for that matter?  Odds are, you DO know a psychopath.  I found that I do.  Like Ronson, who simply took a crash course on psychopath-spotting, which he chronicles in his new book, The Psychopath Test, you can learn the tricks on snap analyzing people who may or may not be totally insane.  His publisher, Picador, posted the below test…

Have you read the man’s work??
Probably, if you are visiting this site…but if not, get clued in quick! Ronson’s non-fictional accounts of the odd and bizarre world we dwell in may save your life! At a minimum they’ll alter the way you view your life and the society we live in.
He’s the author of 3 eye-opening bestsellers:
THEM: Adventures with Extremists,
The Men Who Stare at Goats, and recentlty,
The Psychopath Test.

A quirky English journalist, he’s written other books and written/directed a series called “Crazy Rulers of the World,” which you won’t find on DVD but can preview here:

I suggest you read as much of him as you can! And no, I don’t work for his publishers! I’m just a fan…like you will be, if you aren’t already.
